Today's Member of the Week is Kate Hurst. Kate works at Archbishop Bergan Catholic School in Fremont, Nebraska. She has been a school librarian for seventeen years.
We asked Kate some questions about her experience as a school librarian and we would like to share them with you.
What's your favorite thing about your job as a school librarian?
My favorite thing about being a librarian is seeing the students fall in love with a good book.
Name one children's book that you couldn't live without in your library.
Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester
Tell us why you decided to join the Elementary Librarian Community. What's your favorite thing about it?
I joined the Elementary Librarian Community to share and receive new ideas for lesson planning. I love that every lesson is linked to the standards and all I have to do is print and I'm ready to go. It is a real time saver!
What's the biggest challenge you're currently facing when it comes to your school library?
Balancing the many hats I have to wear being in a small library, teaching K-6 computer classes and tech coordinator for the elementary. I have no para or library assistant, I have to rely on volunteers for everything. Thankfully our parents and community members are awesome and I am able to keep things rolling.
If you could give one piece of advice to a brand new school librarian (or someone considering becoming a school librarian), what would it be?
My advice to brand new school librarians is listen to your students. Be open and willing to be goofy and have fun. Let the love of reading shine through you and always encourage your students to go beyond their comfort zone!
