Today's Member of the Week is Lynn Bigbie. Lynn works at West Chatham Elementary School in Pooler, GA. She has been a school librarian for six years.
We asked Lynn some questions about her experience as a school librarian and we would like to share them with you.
What's your favorite thing about your job as a school librarian?
I am able to see and work with all of the students that are in my building. I am able to help nurture their love of reading. I want them to enjoy reading!
Name one children's book that you couldn't live without in your library.
There are so many but I enjoy "I Need My Monster." It is a fun book to read.
Tell us why you decided to join the Elementary Librarian Community. What's your favorite thing about it?
I joined the Elementary Librarian Community when I was required to teach classes daily in my library. As a new school librarian, I needed help and support to get quality lessons that were meaningful in the library. I was feeling overwhelmed when I moved from the classroom to the library. The Elementary Librarian Community was a place where I could share and receive lessons to use.
What's the biggest challenge you're currently facing when it comes to your school library?
One of the biggest challenges for me is organization. I have great ideas but the day to day items that distract me keep me disorganized. I am basically on call at all times with the technology that is housed in our building. I am the first point of contact when a computer or a projector is not working and they are needed for an immediate lesson. I am currently trying to make our library a "cool" and inviting place. We have made small steps toward this goal.
If you could give one piece of advice to a brand new school librarian (or someone considering becoming a school librarian), what would it be?
Just know that there will be small fires on a daily basis that will require your attention. Don't let that frustrate you. Make your school library, now the "learning commons," a friendly and inviting place where the students and teachers want to go.
