Today's Member of the Week is Nancy Piper. Nancy works at Wendell Creative Arts & Science Magnet Elementary School in Wendell, NC. She has been a school librarian for sixteen years.
We asked Nancy some questions about her experience as a school librarian and we would like to share them with you.
What's your favorite thing about your job as a school librarian?
Working with the elementary age students on finding books and reading materials that they are interested in. Seeing the reluctant student's reactions when they realize that there may be reading materials that they are interested in. I also enjoy those students who are fearless readers who want to read all types of material.
Being a librarian is the best job!
Name one children's book that you couldn't live without in your library.

Tell us why you decided to join the Elementary Librarian Community. What's your favorite thing about it?
I decided to join because we can always learn from each other. Learning from others who do your job is invaluable, especially since a lot of times you are the only one in the building that does your job. Love the boards and the lesson plans.
What's the biggest challenge you're currently facing when it comes to your school library?
Having the money to purchase all the books that are worthy of use for the curriculum in addition to the books that are great reads for the students.
If you could give one piece of advice to a brand new school librarian (or someone considering becoming a school librarian), what would it be?
Do not try to conquer this job alone. Make connections with others in your county or system, in your state and around the country. You will be surprised at how much you can learn from others who might look at your same struggles or issues in a different way. Connect with your principal and be an advocate for yourself and your program.
