Today's Ed Tech Tuesday focus is a Wikispaces review. Wikispaces allows people to create wikis. According to the Wikispaces website, a wiki is "a space on the Web where you can share work and ideas, pictures and links, videos and media — and anything else you can think of." We've all heard of Wikipedia, and Wikispaces is similar to that - a place where people can create, share, and edit content.
There are wikis for just about anything you can imagine. I am a member of a wiki called Elementary Library Routines, which is a collection of all kinds of library related information. I'm also a member of the LM_NET wiki for library media specialists. Have something to add to a wiki? Just join the wiki and add it!
Wikispaces offers free accounts for educators and students. Create a wiki for resources to use in your classes, or better yet, collaborate with a classroom teacher to create a wiki for their students! I love wikis because you don't have to be in the same physical location to share links, notes, or even assignments.
Wikis in the Library
Here are some suggestions from Wikispaces on how to use wikis in your library or classroom. You can also type some keywords into the search bar at the top of the screen to find wikis that interest you. I can think of several ways to use Wikispaces in the library. How about starting a book reviews wiki? Have students write reviews on books they've read and put the link on your school website. How about starting a wiki for book suggestions? Students and teachers could add their suggestions on books they'd like to see in the library. Wikispaces would be a great place to share library lesson plans as well!
How are you using Wikispaces? If you're not, what ideas do you have for wikis related to the library? Share your Wikispaeces review and ideas with us in the comments!
