New apps keep popping up everywhere these days and it’s good to know that despite all the advances in technology, libraries continue its relentless crusade of fighting ignorance by encouraging the youth’s love for knowledge -- constantly tickling their curiosity to expand their understanding of the world and possibly even themselves.
Snapchat may seem a simple app, but librarians have discovered a way to connect with students by posting photos of themselves and their recommended book.
I read this article (click here) and I was just amazed at both the simplicity and their ingenuity, how these librarians managed to use this lighthearted platform to get their students to interact as well as promote the library’s events and programs.
“Social media is where students are getting their news,” Byrd Little said, “so it’s important that I share information out on those channels. Every morning I take a snap of the school schedule because it can be confusing to students. I also promote national and fun or interesting holidays on Snapchat.”
Snapchat appears to be most popular among the teenagers, or those in the 4th and 5th grade, with that in mind they started the #TeenBookTuesday and a “What Are You Reading Wednesday.”
The students started to look forward to these book recommendations and they have a “Teen Takeover” or Snapchat Ambassadorships that allow the teenagers to become content creators. They even have a Libraries on Snapchat directory! Which is also very cool.
The only constant thing in life is change, and it is so rewarding to know that libraries still find a way to persevere despite all the change that comes our way.
Have you tried Snapchat? What books would you recommend to your 1st grade - 6th grade students? Share your thoughts with the community by commenting below 🙂

The really love that little app and so I figured if that's where they're at then I'll go to them! I love that it's fast, simple and a quick way to promote books, library programs and more.
