Today's Member of the Month is Kendall Doogan. Kendall works at St. Mary's School in Oak Ridge, TN. It's her first year as a school librarian!
We asked Kendall some questions about her experience as a school librarian and we would like to share them with you.
What's your favorite thing about your job as a school librarian?
My favorite thing about being a school librarian is sharing my love of books with the entire school!
Name one children's book that you couldn't live without in your library.
Give Me Back My Book
Tell us why you decided to join the Elementary Librarian Community. What's your favorite thing about it?
I decided to join the Elementary Librarian Community because I am new to this position. I have been a classroom teacher (3rd-5th) for the last 15 years. When the opportunity to transition to Librarian (and Technology Teacher) presented itself, I couldn't pass it up. I love the lesson ideas and support ELC offers.
What's the biggest challenge you're currently facing when it comes to your school library?
My biggest challenge is time. I only have the students for 30 minute time blocks. I'm over planning. I'm also trying to get caught up on entering new books. I inherited a room full of books that need to be cataloged (a good problem to have).
If you could give one piece of advice to a brand new school librarian (or someone considering becoming a school librarian), what would it be?
Librarians are more important than ever! With everyone so absorbed with technology today, everyone, especially children, need to experience the wonder of books. Take time for read alouds. Have the kids, even big kids, explore picture books. Let them see you with books.
