Today's Member of the Week is Stacie Eskildsen. Stacie works at Evergreen Elementary School in Holmen, WI. She has been a school librarian for seventeen years.
We asked Stacie some questions about her experience as a school librarian and we would like to share them with you.
What's your favorite thing about your job as a school librarian?
Watching students get excited about reading! Sharing great stories/books. I love to see students make connections to stories and characters.
Name one children's book that you couldn't live without in your library.
The One & Only Ivan
Tell us why you decided to join the Elementary Librarian Community. What's your favorite thing about it?
I was a middle school librarian for 13 years. Four years ago I made the switch to elementary. The previous librarian left no lesson plans behind. I felt like I was starting from scratch. The Elementary Librarian Community helped me tremendously!
What's the biggest challenge you're currently facing when it comes to your school library?
I have a fixed schedule. This makes it hard to find time to collaborate with teachers. I would love to have more time to integrate library skills and classroom units. I am lucky that my district supports our library media program & understands its importance.
If you could give one piece of advice to a brand new school librarian (or someone considering becoming a school librarian), what would it be?
Enjoy the students excitement for reading. Seek out other school librarians for support. Listen to what students & staff need & want.
