What are you planning for back to school? It's been on my mind this week, so I thought I'd put some back to school library ideas together. We always have an Open House at my school, and I'm planning to be very visible that night. I think it's a good idea to host an event in the library so you are able to introduce yourself to parents. We have a poster maker in my school, so I'm planning to make a large banner that says, "Stop by the library!" Make it known that the library is an important part of your school.
Once parents enter the library, have information ready for them. How about an Accelerated Reader Guide for Parents (or Reading Counts), information on how to volunteer in the library, and lists of recommended books for their child's grade level? You could set up a special drink or snack station (if you don't have new carpet like me!) or even do a book giveaway drawing if you have unprocessed books from vendors or from your book fair. I want people to leave knowing that our library is an exciting place to visit!
You can check out my LiveBinders to see examples of other people's top book lists.
Are you subscribed to my email list? Email subscribers will get a monthly newsletter full of tips and bonus ideas that won't be available on my site! It's free to subscribe, so what are you waiting for? Just enter your name and email address. As a gift to you, I will send a sample of my library lesson plans just for signing up!
While you're at it, don't forget to follow me on Twitter (@elem_librarian) and Facebook (Elementary Librarian) so you'll be sure to get all my updates as soon as they're available.
What are your plans for Open House or back to school? Share them in the comments!
What grades do your lesson plans cover? I teach PK4-8th grade.
This is my first year as an elementary librarian in 20 years!! I'm looking for info and ideas to get things rolling. Thanks!
