Today's Member of the Month is Sandy Young. Sandy works at Ascension Episcopal School in Lafayette, LA. She has been a school librarian for 1 year.
We asked Sandy some questions about her experience as a school librarian and we would like to share them with you.
What's your favorite thing about your job as a school librarian?
I get to see so many students that want to read. It gives me a chance to do fun activities with them and show them how much fun reading can be. I can also reach out to those who are reluctant readers to help them find books that they enjoy.
Name one children's book that you couldn't live without in your library.
Wayside School by Louis Sachar
Tell us why you decided to join the Elementary Librarian Community. What's your favorite thing about it?
As a first year librarian, I felt I needed guidance to help provide stimulating and pertinent lessons for the library.
What's the biggest challenge you're currently facing when it comes to your school library?
If you could give one piece of advice to a brand new school librarian (or someone considering becoming a school librarian), what would it be?
Create a library that is stimulating, warm and inviting--where students feel comfortable coming into and hanging out. Create opportunities like after school book clubs to get students interested in new books.
