Today's Member of the Week is Mary Ann Teal. Mary Ann works at Decherd Elementary in Decherd, Tennessee. She has been a school librarian for 4 years.
We asked Mary Ann some questions about her experience as a school librarian and we would like to share them with you.
What's your favorite thing about your job as a school librarian?
I love when students get excited about the books they are reading.
Name one children's book that you couldn't live without in your library.

Tell us why you decided to join the Elementary Librarian Community. What's your favorite thing about it?
With everything else my job requires, it is nice that I don't have to spend hours every week coming up with 6 different standard based lessons for my classes and gather all the resources for those lessons. The plans from Elementary Librarian are easy to follow and include everything my district requires of my weekly lesson plans. I also love the extra lessons that are emailed to me that are designed for upcoming holidays or special events.
What's the biggest challenge you're currently facing when it comes to your school library?
I think the biggest challenge for me is the same as many libraries, funding. It takes a lot of money to not only provide students with quality reading material but also the supplies to keep the books in decent, lasting condition. I also financially support AR other reading activities throughout the school year. I do have two book fairs each school year to help keep the library running.
If you could give one piece of advice to a brand new school librarian (or someone considering becoming a school librarian), what would it be?
Put on your running shoes because it is a nonstop job that you will love.
